What to do if your luggage is missing?
- If your suitcase doesn’t arrive at the baggage claim area, immediately contact the lost baggage department (available at every airport). The information desk or airport staff will help you locate it.
- If the airport luggage department cannot locate your suitcase, contact the airline you travelled with or its representative office.
- If you have baggage insurance, report the incident to airline, police, or other authorized party indicated by these officials immediately and get a written report (certification) confirming the incident.
- A claim regarding loss of or damage to luggage must be submitted in writing to your airline or its representative office no later than seven days after the event.
How does insurance help?
If you have luggage insurance and it is more than 6 hours late in arriving in a foreign country, the insurance company will reimburse you for up to 150 euros for the purchase of necessary items. You will be refunded by the insurance agency upon your return to Lithuania. But don’t forget to submit receipts for proof of purchase.
Important: if you purchased a final destination ticket including connecting flights, the airline is responsible for the transfer of your luggage – you need not take any action.
The luggage of Lithuanian citizens is most frequently “lost” in London, England.
Transportation of illegal and dangerous items
Before packing a suitcase, be sure to check what type of baggage you are not allowed to bring when flying. You cannot bring guns, gun imitations, knives, manicure sets, scissors or other dangerous-looking items into the passenger area of an airplane.
You are not allowed to take alcoholic beverages of over 70 proof onto a plane, neither in the passage area nor in the luggage compartment. Airline customs agents have the right to ask you to open your luggage without explanation.
If you have guns and/or cold weapons, even if they’re souvenirs, inquire in advance as to the proper procedure for their transportation.
If you have sharp or dangerous items, put them in your general luggage or leave them behind.
